Eczema and food

You must review what goes into your digestive system. Eczema may be helped by eliminating wheat, dairy products, eggs, peanuts and (unfermented) soy products. Not everybody has the same food sensitivities, so doing an immune assay might be useful, or test for sensitivity yourself via temporary food elimination. Review substances that make contact with your skin, skin lotions, sun blockers, shampoo, deodorants, perfumes.

Eczema and hygiene

Do not use soap unless you are properly dirty, like after a day in the garden, after building work or wielding the spanners on your motorcar. Soap dissolves the fats in your skin. Dry skin is one of the main problems in eczema, so do not make matters worse when water and a gentle scrub alone can get you clean.

Eczema skin pliability

Cracked, itchy skin is a hallmark of eczema. To reduce the chance of cracking you must 1) keep the skin oils replenished, daily 1.8g omega-3 fats eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found in fish oil significant reduce symptoms of eczema after 12 weeks as it helps to reduce leukotriene B4, an inflammatory substance that plays a role in eczema, 2) keep so well-nutritioned that your pores are small and thus do not let water out and 3) speed up your skin healing. Scratching the dry, itchy skin can further damage the skin barrier and activate the immune system. Histamine directly stimulates histamine type 1 (H1) receptors on itch-specific nerve fibers. Note that, when skin heals, it can become temporarily itchy, this is a passing phase that people who have had a cut may know about. Adjust dosage accordingly.

Eczema skin repair

You want to accellerate your innate ability to repair your skin. This can be achieved by ingesting very high quality, non-latex aloe vera in high dosage. The vegetarian capsules of Aloeride make this possible even for young children. Also these vegetarian capsules are blissful for anyone who cannot stand the awful taste of aloe vera gel. There are lots of topical preparations that encourage healing but hygiene on the outside + more nutrients to heal in food is always the safest approach.

Eczema topical help

Gently rub the affected skin with emollients (moisturisers) like E45 lotion or Vaseline Petroleum Jelly Original which is triple-purified, fragrance-free and hypoallergenic; bees wax and propolis also are popular. A soak in a lukewarm bath with a generous helping of colloidal oatmeal (from finely-ground oats) for 10-15 minutes may soften rough skin and relieve itching. If the cracks in your skin are deep and numerous you should not attempt a colloidal oatmeal bath.

Eczema is often part of a wider immunological dysregulation, and especially atopic eczema can be the result of a shift into a Th2* predominant state. Due to the fact that chronic psychological stress as well as parasites such as worms and also fungi (Candida) are well known to shift the immune state further in a Th2 predominant response, these are often also triggering factors for the eczema and the condition should not only be treated symptomatically, but the underlying immune dysregulation should also be addressed. Engystol and Heel GmbH products containing “Suis” organs are very good immunoregulators to restore a Th1/Th2 balance. With all patients with eczema, a general detoxification should be done; however, this should be a late event, once the Th1/Th2 balance is restored. Some patients with eczema will experience a relapse when detoxification is started; this is milder when the condition is first brought under control.
*Th2-type cytokines include interleukins 4, 5, and 13, which are associated with the promotion of IgE and eosinophilic responses in atopy, and also interleukin-10, which has more of an anti-inflammatory response. In excess, Th2 responses will counteract the Th1 mediated microbicidal action.
